Welcome to Custom Woolen Mills - a working museum! Located near Carstairs, Alberta, we have been producing fine woolen products on our unique industrial revolution machinery for over 25 years.
Custom Woolen Mills is a full processing plant. We wash, dye, card, spin, sew and knit. We are also a working museum. Our carding machines date from 1868 to 1910. Our spinning mule dates back to 1910 and is the only operational one in Canada.
We produce top quality comforters, pillows, mattress pads, sleeping bags, socks, batts, carded wools and yarns for knitting and weaving and other handcrafts. We supply custom processing services for hand crafters and sheep producers. We also do custom work for other fibres, ask for our exotic price list. |
We carry:
Rovings - thick, continuous cords of wool for hand-spinning or hooking rugs and saddle pads.
Spinning Rolls - single strands of carded wool for knitting or spinning.
Bulky 4 Strand - 4 strands of carded wool for knitting bulky sweaters.
Lopi Soft Spun Yarn - softly spun yarn for knitting Icelandic style sweaters. Can be used on a chunky knitting machine. Also good for weft in weaving.
Batts - For filling comforters, spinning or felting.
Mule Spinner Yarns:
Two Ply - sport weight, can be used in knitting machines, hand knitting or in weaving for warp or weft.
Three Ply - fisherman knit or Aran weight, can be used for hand knitting or in weaving for warp or weft.

The last two small family mills remaining in Western Canada were brought together near Carstairs by the present owners in 1977. The mill processes approximately 160,000 lb./year. Custom Woolen Mills looks for ways to be environmentally responsible, participating in products such as solar heating, composting and natural dyeing.
We invite you to come and visit us, take a live tour of our mill, and browse through our showroom of handmade wool products, knitting and craft supplies and gift items in the countryside.
We are open for self-guided tours from 9:00-3:00 Monday through Friday. For groups of 8 or more, please contact us in advance to arrange a guided tour. |
