Julie has been handknitting from the age of five and now lives in Vancouver, BC. She is passionate about knitting as an art form. It is her belief that the contemplative pace of handknitting offers an intimacy with the fibers that is not achieved through high output techniques. It is through this intimacy that a greater depth of understanding of how patterns, colours and fibers blend to create each unique garment.
Gossamer Knitwear is a company established to sell one-of-a-kind items and to encourage the appreciation of handknitting as an art form. Julie gives talks and lecturers to promote her craft and is now offering Master Classes focusing on designing one-of-a-kind creations.
Julie’s own work is influenced by her background in landscape paintings and keen observation of the colours and textures observed in the landscapes of the BC coast. Motifs of natural elements such as leaves are commonly featured in her work. Julie honours both the traditions of the past with an eye on function for a modern lifestyle in her unique collection of scarves, shawls and accessories.
