Mabel Corlett
Knitwear Designer - Hand
Teacher
Mabel's first love was geology. With a Ph.D in geology from the University of Chicago, Mabel did research work in Zurich and taught as an associate professor at Queen's University.
In 1986 she opened "The Wool Room" in Kingston, Ontario. Bored with the "sameness" in commercial sweater design, Mabel began designing her own sweaters in 1988.

Mabel's patterns are truly unique. Drawing from a rich Canadian background, Mabel has designed for international events in the Kingston area including Queen's University, and was a finalist in The Museum for Textiles' "Kaffe Fassett" call for entries.
In fact Kaffe Fassett himself chose Mabel's entry to be the one closest resembling his own in style and philosophy.
Another crowning achievement was the presentation of one of Mabel's designs to Prince Charles on his royal visit to Queen's University.

In addition to being "technically correct", Mabel's fair isles, ganseys, intarsias . . . the list goes on . . . are rich in historical and cultural motifs, often alluding to very specific details of time and place in the intricacies of the design.
Patterns for Mabel's sweaters are available by mail order; they can also be found at www.patternfish.com. |
