Paulette Lane
Knitwear Designer - Hand
Mail Order
Creativity has always been a part of Paulette's life. Even while she spent 10 years as a production potter, sewing, spinning, weaving and knitting were prominent activities. Since 1984, knitting has been her major focus and passion.
Unhappy with the fit of most commercial patterns, Paulette began designing her own knitwear. "Not all bodies are created equal. Even a loose style can fit poorly if the wearer has narrow shoulders and a short torso."
Paulette's goal is to help knitters understand that most patterns can be adjusted for a perfect fit. Her "Perfect Fit Sock" is not so much a pattern as an explanation of how to knit a sock that fits well. The ideas can be applied to all sock patterns.
As an active member of the West Coast Knitters and the Vancouver Guild of Fabric Arts several of her garments have been included in the VGFA annual shows.
Paulette feels that knitting is a therapeutic and spiritual experience. Something of the knitter goes into every garment he/she creates.
She also believes that knitting is a skill that should be taught to all children. It teaches creativity, problem solving with a little bit of math and geometry on the side.
Children should learn the satisfaction of creatively expressing themselves. "Teach two people to knit, one to replace you and one to increase the fold." is a phrase that she borrowed from a knitter on the Knit List a few years ago. "Keep Canada Knitting" is her signature.
PLANE Images Note Cards
Books and museums that display vintage knitting rarely know the origin of the garment or the knitter. We are turn of the century knitters. People will look back on this time with curiosity in the same way that we look back at the turn of the century from 1890 to 1910. Current knitting books and magazines record the work of the professional knitters and designers but that represents only a small portion of the knitting community.
Plane Images Knitting Note Cards focuses on the knitters that keep the knitting world alive, the knitters who knit every stitch. Their work needs to be recorded, too. Each note card features a colour macro (close up) photo of knitting and identifies the knitter on the reverse.
PLANE Images Knitting Bracelets
The Knitting Bracelet was designed for Fair Isle knitting to keep the balls of yarn from getting tangled and to keep the colours on the correct side. The background colour is always on the right or if there is not single background colour, the light colour is always on the right side.
The bracelet worked so well for Fair Isle knitting that it began to be used for all knitting. It is much easier to answer the phone with a Knitting Bracelet on your arm. It is also great for knitting at guild meetings when you are always up and down to look at other's work.
When knitting in public, a Knitting Bracelet prevents the ball from rolling down the aisle in the theatre, restaurant or bus. Plus, it keeps the ball of yarn out of the way of cats.
